Rest and relaxation is something that is so vital to mental health and most often neglected. In today’s world, life is work, work, work, busy, busy, busy. Something I try to do regularly, is take a break and rest.
Being overly stressed can cause a lot of strain on your body and mental health. For me, when I’m stressed out, all my symptoms seem to be amplified. The fuse is much shorter when I haven’t had adequate time to rest.
Rest doesn’t just mean sleeping, although that is extremely important. When I first re-booted my journey to mental wellness, I had to start with sleeping. I had to get on the right medication to help me get the sleep I needed. It took a very long time to find the right medication; but I can say, I went from 3-4 hours a night, to 8-10. A huge improvement to my sleep, and my moods!
Sleep is not the only rest we need. We need time to relax. Do nothing, take your mind off things. For a person with ADHD, that can be incredibly hard. I’ve learned to find things that I enjoy that don’t take a ton of energy. I personally love to sit outside in nature. Something about watching the birds and hearing the wind chimes makes me feel very relaxed. I also learned I love adult coloring books. They don’t require a lot of energy or thinking and I’m able to zone out and relax. And my absolute favorite thing I do for rest, bubble baths! A lot of people I know say they don’t have time for baths. Here’s the thing, you have to make time. You have to learn to make time in your day for yourself. Especially if your battling mental health.
Rest and relaxation is so important to a happy, healthy life. But the thing to remember is it’s something you have to make time for. You have to make time for yourself if this busy crazy world. Whenever I make time for myself I notice a huge impact in the way I rest at night, as well as my moods throughout the day. Unwinding is hard sometimes, but it can make a huge impact on your life.
